The Brain Is Amazing. Sort of.

Last night, I watch the movie Limitless. It’s the story of a man who is given a drug that allows him to utilize his entire brain. You see, researchers believe we only use a fraction of the brain’s full power. With this drug, people are able to tap into the rest of the brain, and the results are … well, limitless.

The brain is a fascinating part of the human body. I’m sure all of us can tell stories of hearing a note or two of a song on the radio, and suddenly remembering all the lyrics to the song … even if it’s been many years since you last heard it.

It happened to me earlier this week. I’m back at the gym every day. On Monday, I grabbed a change of clothes and my old combination lock. I hadn’t touched the lock in over two years, and yet the moment I had it in my hand and began spinning the numbers, I remembered the combination. Amazing. All that stuff stored in your brain.

In fact, I stood there amazed at the power of the brain as I opened the lock to put my bag in the locker earlier this week. Incredible how I could remember those three numbers. I threw my bag in the locker and closed it up, still baffled at how amazing the brain truly was. I began walking toward the change room door, ready to work out, when I realized that perhaps my brain wasn’t as amazing as I was giving it credit for.

I forgot to put on my gym shorts. Yes, I was about to walk out into the gym wearing a t-shirt, socks & shoes, and just my underwear. Good thing my eyes caught what my brain forgot to remind me to do … put on pants.

Yeah, the brain is amazing. Sort of.

What about you? Any fun stories of a time when your brain wasn’t exactly the marvel of the human body it’s supposed to be?

Well, we do use our entire brain. In fact, if you used 20%, or some other ridiculously low number, you would likely die or be a vegetable. So, to make things worse for you, not only are you using your entire brain, but your entire brain working as hard as it could failed to put on pants! :p

I did go out to take my dogs on a walk one day in just my unzipped pajamas and no shirt. It was about 40 feet outside near my apartment before I realized what I had done. No wonder my neighbor was looking so weirdly at me.

Okay, so technically, you’re right. We do use every part of our brain. I think the point I was making is that our brains are not used to the capacity that they could be. I’m certainly not the first to suggest that.

I think your story of going out with the dogs is even funnier than mine!
