K.I.S.S.

No, this isn’t a post about the rock band … although that would make an interesting post. Instead, I’m sitting at Starbucks contemplating the current series we’re doing at the two churches. Living A Life Of Purpose has been extremely well received. There are many people who are clearly taking the challenge to heart and are pursuing the steps necessary to discovering their purpose.

But, I’m struck by something regarding the series. Even though I’m giving a lot of information, discovering your purpose really is easy to do. That’s good, because I’m a simple man and I like things to be simple. It really does just boil down to surrendering your life to God. The more we do that, the more we will discover his will for us.

Isn’t it amazing how complicated we can make things? Step back from just focusing on the series and take a look at life in general. Why is it that we seem to make things more difficult than they need be? Why can’t we just Keep It Simple, Stupid?

It’s hard, isn’t it? Perhaps it’s because the more complicated we make something, the more we take pride in it. After all, anyone can do something that’s simple. It’s takes talent, commitment, intelligence, focus, drive, etc., to stick with something more complicated.

Look at your life. How complicated are you making things? If you’re like me, you’ll quickly try and justify why certain aspects are so difficult to figure out. Here are some of the things I’m trying to work out right now:

  • How to pastor two churches with separate boards, membership, budgets, etc. Complicated stuff.
  • Defining what a biker looks like. Lots of opinions. Very complicated to define.
  • Whether or not I should restart a previously “retired” project. It’s not as simple as yes or no. It’s complicated.
  • How I should tackle my personal debt. Which credit card to pay off first. So very, very complicated.
  • How I’m going to lose the 50 or so pounds that I need to lose. When do I start? How do I do it? Complicated.

What if I took each of these tasks and applied the K.I.S.S. principle? What if I simplified my answers to each of these questions? What if they’re really not as complicated as I am making them out to be?

Have you ever wondered if the reason we make things more complicated is so that we can put off doing them. After all, if the solutions are simple, why are they still on the list of things to do?

What do you think? How do you simplify things? Or do you keep them complicated?

I agree with you Rob. We tend to complicate things that could easily be accomplished if we just jumped in and did it. I am guilty of trying to understand every facet of the task at and. I want to be able to anticipate every possible circumstance, and be prepared for whatever is needed. Unfortunately, this ends up causing me more stress and anxiety.

Analyzing every small aspect is a fault that I constantly work on. I need to learn how to simplify my life, and stop my brain from going into each conceivable outcome, especially since it never goes the way I expect it.

I am learning to KISS, but I am also focusing on one other incredibly powerful, yet over used statement. Simply put, Let Go and Let God!

But then again, it’s easier said than done, or should I say.… It’s complicated! Lol.

Oh well, One Day at a Time! :-)

Wow, you’ve even complicated this post!

    Just kidding! Great thoughts, Chantal.
