I’m reading Rob Bell’s latest book, Jesus Wants to Save Christians, and am thoroughly enjoying it. I’m about half way through the book, and I think it is one of the simplest, easy to understand explanations of the story of God and his people that I’ve read in a long time.
The first half of the book is about how the Old Testament fits into the story of Jesus. It speaks of the significance of the first exodus, and why the people of God, who once reigned in Jerusalem, fell back into bondage. And, why prophets like Isaiah joyously spoke of a second son of David.
Even as I write that last paragraph, I realize how easy it is for me to fall into the wording of the many theological books on the subject that I’ve studied. And that’s the beauty of Bell’s book: he doesn’t do that. He keeps it simple and understandable.
From what I’ve been told by many who have read the book, he turns that simplicity into a little bit of a but-kicking challenge for those of us who exist on this side of David’s second son. I’ll give my impressions of the later half of the book when I’m done it.
But, if you are looking for an easy to read, straightforward explanation of the story of God and his people, grab this book and take it in. If you enjoy it half as much as I am, it will be worth it.
