If you follow Tech news at all, you may have heard about a new gadget called the iPhone. It’s just a simple, little device that will likely reshape the entire cell phone market over the next few years, but I wouldn’t get to caught up in it. Like the internet, it will fade into the realm of other fads …
If you have an iPhone, you’ve been to the new Apps Store on iTunes. And, you may have heard about an application called “I Am Rich”. It’s no longer available, because Apple has decided to remove it.
What is it? Well, let me show you the app for free:
It looks pretty, doesn’t it?
What’s it do? Pretty much exactly what it’s doing right now in this blog picture. Nothing. It’s just a picture.
Is it free? Not quite. In fact, it will run you $999.99 U.S.
That’s right, One Thousand Bucks!
No one would ever buy that! Yeah, that’s what I thought. Who on earth would just throw away a thousand dollars on something so silly. Well, according to Apple, eight people (six Americans and two Europeans) purchaed the app in the first 24 hours.
At least one person who bought it claims he thought it was a joke and didn’t realize it was a serious app. He is complaining and trying to get his money back (According to this blog, he has been successful). But, another buyer has come out defending her purchase, stating that if she wants to spend $999.99 on the app, it’s her right to do so, and websites calling her foolish for doing it are being unfair and rude. Well, I think she’s right, she does have the choice to spend her money foolishly
Is this a story worth reading into? What I’m asking is does it say something about our culture, etc., or is it just eight foolish people out of Millions?
What do you think?
