Transitions

I spent some time this afternoon with the pastor from City Church. As I mentioned in here, Eric has recently stepped down from his role at the church. I will be serving as interim pastor effective the beginning of August.

I was reminded today of how difficult it is to leave a congregation. As a pastor — especially a lead pastor — you pour your heart into a group of people. You believe in them, cheer for them, encourage them. You bury their loved ones, marry their children, and celebrate each moment of their lives with them.

And then, you leave.

Sometimes it’s easy to leave a congregation. The fit wasn’t right, issues have arisen, problems were not able to be overcome, and you can’t wait to get out of town.

But more often — and certainly this is the case with Eric & Angela — you leave because God has called you to a different adventure. Not a better one, just different. In those cases, saying goodbye is often quite difficult. You love these people and now they must learn to move on without you (and you without them).

I’ve been through this process a number of times. Never is it easy. Never is it fun. And yet, it is a part of life as a minister.

Today, I was reminded of the different congregations I’ve had the privilege of serving in. Tyendinega, Frankford, Brockville, Windsor, Irogouis Falls, and now Ottawa. Most of those positions were as a youth or assistant pastor. Two have been as lead pastor. In all cases, friends were made. Expereinces were had. And now, years later, I’ve lost touch with most of the people in those church families.

I look forward to seeing many of them again … one day.

Given what you have said, I don’t think there is a Pastor who would ever want to see their congregation dependent on them. As a father of a different sort, we bring up our children to some day go and take on the world themselves. There is no greater reward then to see your family take what you have taught, apply it to their lives, and soar like an eagle.

I would be mortified to loose my pastor.….then rebuild that again with a stranger.…no not me.…you have your work cut out Rob to help the congregation STAY at City Church!
