Why I support the local team

Main298aI read a great article in today’s Ottawa Sun about Daniel Alfredsson, captain of the Senators. Seems that Alfredsson has become the spokesman for the Royal Ottawa Hospital.

As I read the article, it reminded me again why I am such a big fan of the Senators. I cheer for the local team for a number of reasons: I’m proud of my city and those who represent it; I think the Sens are a very good team; and, I recognize the value they bring to our city.

You would have to scroll down for a long time if I was to mention each player and the good that they do locally. Whether it’s Fisher, Redden, Philipps or Alfredsson, the players often go out of their way to support local charities. They visit our children’s hospital, giving those kids an opportunity to put aside their illness and marvel at being in the presence of one of their stars.

Try as I might, I cannot think of a single Toronto Maple Leaf player who does anything to support a local (Ottawa) cause. Same thing with the Montreal Canadiens. Yes, I realize that players on those teams to much to support their own city’s charities. But I’m talking about Ottawa people supporting a team that helps make the organizations and charities that affect them directly.

Go ahead and wave your Leafs flag or wear your Habs jersey. But just remember, when you have a family member who needs help at the Royal Ottawa, it was Alfredsson who did his part in making sure the money was there to meet your need.

That is such a load of horse droppings! You can’t buy a fan — you are a fan from your heart — not your wallet!

I think it is very noble what these INDIVIDUALS are doing, but lets not confuse / mix the issues. What these INDIVIDUALS do on their own time should have nothing to do with their attraction as a hockey TEAM. Their TEAM support should be based on their PERFORMANCE ( which this past season they did NOT have) as a team. Rob, would the PAOC support and endorse you as a pastor if you were a crappy pastor, but a great neighbor??

Yes, but if the locals don’t support a team, and that team ends up folding and leaving the city, then suddenly all that charity work done by the individuals on that team is gone.
I stand by my post … one of the reasons I cheer for my team is because of the good that the individuals on my team bring to my community.

I do not want the Sens to leave — I love having a hockey team and I think its wonderful the charities they support. AND if they play against any other team then the one I sort of like THEN I will cheer for them.… Alot of times a fan is a fan due to emotional reasons. I do not even LIKE HOCKEYBUT I was raised by a true Toronto fan — (he was born and raised in Toronto) my memories are hearing my father go so happy nuts and it made me smile, still does today — in the case of Sam he spent so much time curled up to his grampa on the couch chearing for Toronto that now he is a fan without knowing its because he loves his grampa .….a fan is from the heart I am not even shure its about the sport. NOW if we could get the sens to support youth hockey so that EVERY household could afford to play.….brilliant no? The sens do that for Ottawa, Boston for Boston, Montreal for Montreal.…

Very true … and to be honest, my challenge is for those hard nose fans who “hate” the Sens yet live in Ottawa … And, you’d be amazed at how much NHL teams do for youth hockey in their cities.

Well that is just juvinile — how can someone HATE a team.….its a sport, a team of people that no one really knows.….you can’t HATE a team! It would be correct to feel anything but hate.…..that is no longer a sport.
That is just dumb dumb stinky boy stuff.

Just to keep the record straight, I don’t hate the Sens nor would I say I like them. I am just neutral in my affections toward them. To be perfectly honest You make a solid point Rob that if the fans don’t support the local team then all the good they do will not continue.
