I read a great article in today’s Ottawa Sun about Daniel Alfredsson, captain of the Senators. Seems that Alfredsson has become the spokesman for the Royal Ottawa Hospital.
As I read the article, it reminded me again why I am such a big fan of the Senators. I cheer for the local team for a number of reasons: I’m proud of my city and those who represent it; I think the Sens are a very good team; and, I recognize the value they bring to our city.
You would have to scroll down for a long time if I was to mention each player and the good that they do locally. Whether it’s Fisher, Redden, Philipps or Alfredsson, the players often go out of their way to support local charities. They visit our children’s hospital, giving those kids an opportunity to put aside their illness and marvel at being in the presence of one of their stars.
Try as I might, I cannot think of a single Toronto Maple Leaf player who does anything to support a local (Ottawa) cause. Same thing with the Montreal Canadiens. Yes, I realize that players on those teams to much to support their own city’s charities. But I’m talking about Ottawa people supporting a team that helps make the organizations and charities that affect them directly.
Go ahead and wave your Leafs flag or wear your Habs jersey. But just remember, when you have a family member who needs help at the Royal Ottawa, it was Alfredsson who did his part in making sure the money was there to meet your need.
